BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- One lane of the northbound Merritt Parkway has reopened Tuesday afternoon in Stratford after a two-car crash closed the road just before 5 p.m., but traffic is now jammed from Norwalk and through the Bridgeport area, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The accident on the northbound parkway is between Exit 52 for Route 8 and Exit 53 for Route 110 was reported at 4:58 p.m. Tuesday. The right lane remains blocked in the area.
The accident is causing nearly 18 miles of backups, all the way from Norwalk's Exit 40B, through Westport, Fairfield and Bridgeport to Stratford's Exit 53.
Another accident was reported on the southbound Merritt at Exit 48 for Route 111/Main Street at 5:08 p.m., DOT said. That crash was cleared just before 6 p.m., but traffic was still jammed in the area.
Traffic tie-ups are reported in both directions in the Bridgeport and Fairfield area and beyond.
It was not clear how long it would take to clear the accident scene on the northbound side of the Merritt, DOT said.
