How accurate was the forecast from the National Weather Service? It was revised upward, to 4 to 6 inches of snow for Fairfield County in the hours before the snow began flying overnight.
The National Weather Service doesn't have snowfall totals from every town in Fairfield County, but here's a roundup from various local spots and the time the measurement was made:
- Easton: 9 inches, 12:49 p.m.
- Weston: 7 inches 10:45 a.m.
- Bridgeport: 7 inches, 10:45 a.m.
- New Canaan: 6.6 inches, noon
- Norwalk: 6 inches, 12:40 p.m.
- Darien: 5.5 inches, 11 a.m.
- Fairfield: 5.5 inches, 10:15 a.m.
- New Fairfield: 5 inches 1 p.m.
- Sandy Hook: 4 inches, 12:15 p.m.
- Danbury: 3 inches, 11 a.m.
Some of the measurements were made before the snowfall had stopped.
By Friday afternoon, the snow and clouds had cleared and bright sun was already hard at work with melting action.
But this is not the end of threats from the weather. Gusty winds could bring down snow-laden tree limbs and power lines into the evening, the National Weather Service warned.
The heavy wet snow, combined with moderate northerly winds of 10 to 20 mph and gusts into the 30s post a continued danger.
Also, temperatures will plunge overnight with a low of about 15 degrees. This could cause melting snow and puddles from the storm to freeze and create black ice. Motorists and pedestrians should use caution.
Saturday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 36 degrees and wind chills of 15 to 25. Temperatures will drop to about 25 overnight.
Super Bowl Sunday will be sunny and in the 40s.
The next chance of snow? That comes Monday, with a 60 percent chance of snow by early afternoon.
