According to AAA, gas costs are at their lowest level for this time of year since 2005, despite some seasonal increases. And motorists are planning to take advantage of the savings by driving instead of flying to their celebratory destinations.
As of Monday, a gallon of regular gas in the Nutmeg State averages $2.44 per gallon, a penny lower than this time last week. Average prices also are down 51 cents compared with this time last year.
Nationally, a similar story is playing out with national average prices today at $2.31, down 2 cents compared with this time last week and down 47 cents compared to this time last year.
AAA points to a strong dollar, dropping crude oil prices, and ample supplies as the reason for the continued decline.
Regionally, prices ranked:
- Greater Bridgeport/Stamford $2.51.
- New Haven/Meriden $2.43.
- Greater Hartford $2.42.
- New London/Norwich $2.43.
- Statewide Average: $2.44.
California and Hawaii, at $2.91 and $2.79, lead the pack as the states with the highest averages. South Carolina and Mississippi at $2 and $2.06, continue at the bottom of the list as the states with the lowest prices.
Connecticut moved down to 11th place in terms of the highest prices in the nation.
