Divided Connecticut Supreme Court Revisits Death Penalty Issue

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The Connecticut Supreme Court is revisiting its decision to abolish capital punishment in the state and instead imprison Death Row inmates for life, according to the Connecticut Post.

Russell Peeler Jr., who ordered the killing of Leroy "B.J." Brown Jr., 8, above, and his mother Karen Clarke, might once again face the death penalty if the state Supreme Court changes a ruling it made last year on the death penalty.

During a 70-minute hearing Thursday, justices seemed willing to overturn the decision to spare those on Death Row, said the Post.

One of the Death Row inmates whose sentence was reduced was Russell Peeler Jr., who ordered the execution-style killing in 1999 of Leroy "B.J." Brown, 8, and his mother, Karen Clarke, in Bridgeport.

It could take months for a final decision on the issue, the Post said.
