Connecticut Department Of Correction To Lay Off 147 Workers

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Pink slips will be heading to 147 employees of the State Department of Corrections, announced Commissioner Scott Semple during a meeting Friday, according to NBC Connecticut.

Some 147 Department of Corrections employees will lose their jobs due to a large deficit in the state budget.

The layoffs are part of the state budget shortfall -- between $550 and $900 million -- which potentially could affect thousands of state workers. Gov. Dannel Malloy said last week the number of employees losing their jobs would be "substantial," reported NBC Connecticut. The legislature is working to try and solve the problem, said NBC Connecticut.

Semple wrote in a letter to employee that it was extremely hard to decide where the cuts will happen, but has to be done “with an emphasis on safety and security,” added NBC Connecticut.
