Gomes is the deputy majority leader and chair of Labor & Public Employees Committee; vice chair of Veterans’ Affairs; and a member of Public Safety & Security and Regulation Review. He represents Bridgeport and Stratford.
He was sworn in Feb. 27, 2015, after winning a special election. He serves a two-thirds of Bridgeport and a portion of Stratford. Before this special election, Gomes had served the 23rd Senate District from 2005 to 2012. He and his family moved to Bridgeport in 1944, where he attended Bridgeport public schools.
In 1983, Gomes was elected to serve on the Bridgeport City Council until 1989.He retired from the United Steelworkers of America in February 1998, and was elected to the Bridgeport City Council again in 1999.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served his first two years in Virginia, where he experienced life under racial segregation while away from the military base. This exposure to racial bias fueled his desire to fight for civil rights and serve as a voice for underserved and marginalized communities. He served the balance of his enlistment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Silver Spring, Md.
