Bridgeport Residents Hurt By Superstorm Sandy Still Can Apply For Loans

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Connecticut businesses and residents affected by 2012’s Superstorm Sandy now have more time to request low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, SBA officials have announced.

According to SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet, the agency has reset the filing period to apply for the loans to Dec. 1, 2016.

“The additional time for businesses, home owners and renters to request federal disaster loans will go a long way in continuing to support the rebuilding efforts of the communities affected by Superstorm Sandy,” Contreras-Sweet said.

The recently approved Recovery Improvements for Small Entities After Disaster Act of 2015 gives the SBA administrator the authority to make disaster loans for Superstorm Sandy for a period of one year.

The declaration covers the following Connecticut counties: Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, Tolland and Windham.

Contreras-Sweet said the SBA’s customer service representatives will be available at the Disaster Loan Outreach Center to answer questions about the disaster loan program and help individuals complete their applications.

The center is in the following communities and open as indicated:

Fairfield County: Bigelow Center for Senior Activities (formerly Fairfield Senior Center), 100 Mona Terrace, Fairfield. Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays until further notice.
New Haven County: Parsons Government Center, 70 W. River St., Room 118, Milford. Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays until further notice.

Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition, she said.

Loan seekers may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application via SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.
