Bridgeport Rescue Mission Thanks Community for 10 Tons of Food Donated at Stuff-a-truck Event

BRIDGEPORT – On July 25 and 26, generous community members stuffed Bridgeport Rescue Mission trucks with more than 10 tons of non-perishable foods during the Mission’s  Stuff-A-Truck Food Drive at Stop & Stop supermarkets.

For the third year in a row, Mission trucks, staff and volunteers were on hand at area Stop & Shop locations to collect items shoppers purchased at the stores and donated as they left.  The groceries—including canned meats, and vegetables, pasta, cereal and peanut butter—are used by the Mission to prepare the meals they serve to homeless guests and residents in their dining room and distribute to families and individuals in disadvantaged neighborhoods through their two Mobile Kitchens.  The items are also included in the Pantry Bags they give to hungry families, which have enough food to feed a family of four.

“While it comes as no surprise, it always warms our hearts to see our community donate so generously to help people who don’t have enough to eat or who may be struggling to feed their families,” said Executive Director Terry Wilcox.  “They’re happy to have the opportunity to make lives better for their neighbors in need here in coastal Fairfield Country, and the men, women and children who benefit from their compassion are so very grateful.” The Mission extends sincere appreciation to the participating Shop & Stop supermarkets, to the volunteers who helped facilitate the event and to the community for its overwhelming response.
