Jones was a firefighter with Truck and Ladder 6 on the East Side Battalion 2 on Central Avenue. He was an eight-year veteran of the Bridgeport Fire Department and is the son of retired Bridgeport firefighter Charlie Jones.
His teen son was also in the car and suffered leg injuries in the accident. A second passenger was also hurt. Both remained in the hospital Sunday, according to the Connecticut Post.
"Jimmie will never be forgotten by his brothers in Truck #6, some of whom were called to the scene of the accident yesterday," the Bridgeport Police Department said in a statement. "We salute this true public servant, father, brother, son, and colleague. May we all come together as a community to support the Jones family and our firefighters who without any second thought will risk and give their lives to protect all of us at any moment."
Jones was off duty when the two-car accident occurred on Bishop Avenue near Connecticut Avenue in the city’s East End at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Post said that Jones' Chevy Impala hit a truck parked on Bishop Avenue, then careened along a fence and became wedged against a utility pole.
Some of his own Ladder 6 truck mates performed CPR on their colleague in a valiant but unsuccessful attempt to save his life, said Av Harris, the city’s director of communications.
Several people with serious injuries had to be extricated from both vehicles, Harris said.
“Mayor (Joe) Ganim joins Fire Chief (Brian) Rooney in extending deepest condolences to the family of Jimmie Jones and extend prayers for the speedy recovery of all victims of this accident,” Harris said.
On Sunday, the flag outside the city’s Fire Engine Company No. 6 flew at half-staff and black bunting hung over one of the large doors at the Central Avenue station, the Connecticut Post said.
Inside, firefighters were dealing the death of Jones, who they described as the glue who held the group together and who worked as the cook in the fire station, the Post said.
