For those interested, the organization will host a new volunteer orientation at the American Red Cross Bridgeport Office on Thursday, May 19.

The Red Cross helps more than 150,000 military members, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to the challenges of military service.

Through offices worldwide, the Red Cross provides a continuum of care throughout a service member’s career and after their military service ends.

They also provide training opportunities and services to military members, veterans and their families including preparedness and health and safety courses, outreach with preparedness information, and coping skills.

In addition, the Red Cross responds to military families experiencing an immediate need by providing emergency communication, family follow up, access to financial assistance, and disaster services.

“In 2015, the American Red Cross Connecticut provided emergency communication, resiliency training to strengthen military families and emergency financial assistance to 580 military families,” said Mario Bruno, CEO, American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region. “Our volunteers enable us to provide these services to our military family and we look forward to having more volunteers join us in fulfilling our mission.”

The hour-long orientation session is designed to introduce new volunteers to the history of the Red Cross and to learn about all of the local volunteer opportunities available. The office is at 158 Brooklawn Ave. The class will run from 10 to 11 a.m.

Those interested in attending the session must register in advance online at www.redcross.org/ct/volunteer. For more information, call 860-678-2788.
