Bridgeport Hosting Summit On Nitrogen Pollution In Long Island Sound

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Save the Sound, a two-state program of the Connecticut Fund for the Environment and the Long Island Sound Study, will bring together experts for the 24th annual Long Island Sound Citizens Summit on Friday, April 10, in Bridgeport.

The event is made possible with support from the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission.

This year’s summit will examine how nitrogen pollution is harming Long Island Sound, review progress on curbing it, and identify opportunities for future action.

National and state leaders, scientists, and stakeholders will delve into the environmental, health, and economic impacts of nitrogen on the Sound and surrounding communities.

Discussions will include:

  • “Dead Zones, Wetlands, Ocean Acidification and Wildlife: Nitrogen Pollution’s Path of Destruction;”
  • “The Nitrogen Scorecard: Are We Back from the Brink?;”
  • “Lessons Learned: Nitrogen Pollution—and Solutions—in the Northeast;”
  • “Bringing It Home: What’s Next for Nitrogen and Long Island Sound;” and
  • “Taking Action for the Future: Alternative Technologies and Innovative Solutions.” 

Connecticut state Sen. Ted Kennedy Jr. will give the keynote address. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. at the Harbor Club, Webster Bank Arena, 600 Main St., Bridgeport.
