According to the National Day Calendar, the first pies appeared around 9500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age. Aside from being a source of sweet tooth satisfaction, pies have also been used over the years for humor ever since actor Ben Turpin received one in the face in the silent movie, "Mr. Flip" in 1909.

In Fairfield County, residents have a host of pie places to choose from. Plan now to buy yours.

Oronoque Farms in Shelton currently has about 15 varieties, with up to 25 in the fall. The most popular is the apple crumb.

"We've had the same recipe since we started," said Heather Scofield who works at Oronoque. "We use all natural ingredients, no preservatives, and people love the pie. We were voted 'Best Apple Pie in Connecticut' by Connecticut Magazine.'"

Michele's Pies in Norwalk is another big pie destination. The bakery, in fact, has had 27 first-place winning pies in the National Pie Championships. Its signature pie is the Chocolate Pecan Bourbon and Store Manager Stephen Jarrett said what makes the pies so good is that they use fresh fruit and keep the ingredients simple -- like at home, he said. "Everybody loves them."
