If you're 60 pounds or more overweight and concerned about developing obesity-related conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and gastric reflux, weight-loss surgery -- known as bariatric surgery -- may be an option.
There are three standard options for such surgeries:
- gastric bypass -- bypasses a portion of the stomach and re-routes food to the intestines
- adjustable gastric banding -- adjusts the size of the stomach to restrict food intake
- sleeve gastrectomy -- a portion of the stomach is surgically removed
In these free educational seminars, surgeons from the Yale Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at Bridgeport Hospital will discuss the criteria which qualify people for such surgery, the pros and cons of each procedure, the long-term health benefits, and the post-operative counseling and support available from the bariatric team.
To register for one of these seminars, call 203-789-6237. Each session will run from 6-7:30 p.m., at the Fairfield County Medical Center, 112 Quarry Road, Trumbull.
