AAA Conducting Roundup Of Old Car Seats Across Fairfield County

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The public is encouraged to turn in expired, damaged, or recalled car seats as part of AAA Northeast’s Great Car Seat Roundup through Sept. 19.

Those who turn in these "outlaw" seats will have the option of collecting a $5 bounty for each seat or donating the cash to the local SafeKids Coalition.

AAA members and non-members may turn in the "outlaw” car seats at any one of AAA Northeast’s eight branch offices in Norwalk, Branford, Danbury, Hamden, Fairfield, Milford, Stamford and Waterbury.

The Coalition will use the funds to purchase new car seats for infants and children in need.

The event is a way AAA is removing from circulation expired, damaged or recalled car seats that may be in use, in storage or available through tag sales, thrift shops and other venues.

If used, these unsafe seats will not provide ample protection in an automobile crash.

Winter Bros. Waste Systems of Danbury and Seymour is assisting AAA in disposing of these unsafe seats.

“A safe car seat is one of the most important steps parents and caregivers can take to keep children safe,” says Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast’s public affairs spokesperson.

“Any donations we collect through this roundup will go a long way toward helping those in our community who might otherwise struggle with this crucial safety measure," Mayko says.

This campaign is the club’s contribution to Child Passenger Safety week, a national event that begins Sept. 13 and culminates with Seat Check Saturday on Sept. 19.

On that day, area Safe Kids coalitions, health care providers and child passenger safety technicians host checkup events nationwide.
