Cardinal Shehan Center Appoints New Board Members in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — The Cardinal Shehan Center, a youth center dedicated to enriching the lives of youth through learning, has named seven new members to its board of directors.

The new directors are:

  • Deb Clancy of First Niagara Bank
  • Richard Burtula of Berchem, Moses & Devlin P.C.
  • Jonathan D’Elia of People’s United Insurance
  • Joseph Haley of Compuware
  • Eric Hendlin of Dworken, Hillman, LaMorte & Sterczala P.C.
  • Tom Reilly
  • Jeff Roberts of Independent Jewelers Organization

“Our seven new board members bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Cardinal Shehan Center and they each will play a key role in helping the Cardinal Shehan Center continue to fulfill its mission,” said Terry O’Connor, the center's executive director. “Their experience and proven track records in their fields will be a tremendous asset to the Cardinal Shehan Center."

The responsibilities of the board ranges from involvement with fundraising efforts to attending board and committee meetings to educating the public about the Cardinal Shehan Center.

Founded in 1962, the Cardinal Shehan Center’s mission is to enrich the lives of youth through learning. The center, at 1494 Main St., has a tradition of offering Bridgeport-area youth a clean, safe environment with opportunities to grow intellectually and physically, to become responsible, caring members of their community, to build independence and to develop a sense of belonging, according to a press release.

It offers a variety of programs for about 4,000 youth annually, including after-school and Saturday programs, basketball leagues, summer day camp and physical education classes at local schools, according to a press release. In addition, it offers tutoring and other enrichment programs and experiences, such as JWC Girls Zone Program, a leadership program, sailing, karate, swimming, dance, art, cooking, gardening, bee keeping, rugby and more.
