The Village Square project in downtown Haverstraw will include 61 residential units along with commercial and community space, the New York State Department of State announced on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
The development received $1.67 million in state funding through New York's Downtown Revitalization Initiative, which supports projects aimed at improving downtown neighborhoods.
The groundbreaking marks a major step in Haverstraw's plans to bring more housing, businesses, and public amenities to its downtown and waterfront areas, officials said.
"Today’s groundbreaking is an exciting milestone for Haverstraw and a clear sign of the progress we are making to revitalize our downtown," said Haverstraw Mayor Michael Kohut, who added, "This project, along with the many other DRI investments underway, is helping us build a more vibrant, connected, and welcoming downtown for Haverstraw residents and visitors.”
Haverstraw was selected as the Mid-Hudson Region's fifth-round DRI winner in 2022, bringing state investment to several projects throughout the village.
The village also plans to build two basketball courts near the Haverstraw Center, install a permanent Harriet Tubman statue at the Haverstraw African American Memorial Park, and create at least four murals downtown.
Additional improvements include expanding the Haverstraw Brick Museum, upgrading a Main Street pocket park with seating and gathering space, and installing signs to help visitors navigate downtown.
"Through the Downtown Revitalization Initiative, New York is supporting Haverstraw’s vision for a more connected, accessible, and vibrant downtown, while creating new opportunities for investment and growth," said New York State Secretary of State Walter Mosley on Wednesday.
