Jacari Amon Phauls has been sentenced to 40 years in prison, with all but 20 years suspended, after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the September 2025 death of Saunders Alton Mitchell IV in Suitland, according to the Prince George's County State's Attorney's Office.
Mitchell was found outside on Darel Drive on Monday, Sept. 1, 2025, suffering from traumatic injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His death was later ruled a homicide, though investigators initially released few details about what led to his fatal injuries.
Prosecutors have now revealed that Phauls intentionally struck Mitchell with his vehicle.
Surveillance footage showed Phauls making a U-turn before accelerating toward Mitchell and pursuing him behind a building, according to the state's attorney's office.
Phauls then fled the scene on foot carrying a duffle bag, prosecutors said.
The circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation were not disclosed.
In addition to his 20-year prison term, Phauls will serve five years of supervised probation following his release.
