Ruben Guanipa Ramirez, 26, toured around Long Island with his victim, who has not been publicly identified, before sneaking up from behind, covering the man’s face with a cloth and stabbing him in the side on Saturday, Feb. 28, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said.
The man fought Guanipa Ramirez off, then took the suspect’s vehicle and drove home to Queens, where he met police, according to prosecutors. Cops later found three kitchen knives, rope, duct tape, blankets, plastic drop cloths, a large-wheeled bag, gloves, and a boxcutter in the car, authorities said.
“This defendant allegedly drove a man that he knew to a remote beach and attacked him from behind with a knife,” District Attorney Ray Tierney said. “The evidence recovered from his vehicle raises serious questions about what he intended that night.”
The incident began when Guanipa Ramirez picked up the victim from his Queens residence, authorities said. They then headed to a pool hall in Baldwin and later to Jones Beach before finally reaching Gilgo Beach, investigators said.
Guanipa Ramirez launched the sneak attack as they were walking back to the car from the beach, but the other man fought him off and escaped with the vehicle, police said. Guanipa Ramirez was arrested later that day walking down Long Island Expressway in Nassau County.
He was arraigned Tuesday, March 31 on charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault, prosecutors said. He was held on $200,000 cash, $500,000 bond or $2,000,000 partially secured bond and is due back in court on April 29. Guanipa Ramirez faces a maximum of 25 years in prison if convicted on the top count.
