The incident happened around 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in New Cassel, according to Nassau County Police. Officers responded to the Town of North Hempstead Community Center at 141 Garden St. after receiving a report of a found child.

When officers arrived, they found the unattended 6-year-old boy and launched an investigation.

Police determined the child had been left in the care of a family friend, who then left the residence, leaving the boy unattended, authorities said.

The family friend, identified as Rood-Diny Illus, 31, of New Cassel, was arrested without incident and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, according to police.

The child was evaluated at the scene by a Nassau County Police medic before being released to the custody of a family member, police said.

Illus was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Hempstead on Thursday, Aug. 13.
