Patrick Lin is accused of killing his parents, David and Jean Lin, both 69, at their Hillsborough home on Cornell Trail on Thursday, Sept. 25, Somerset County Prosecutor John McDonald, Chief of County Detectives Francisco Roman Jr., and Hillsborough Township Chief of Police Michael McMahon said.
Officers responded to the scene at the request of a welfare check and attempted to make contact with the residents for nearly two hours that afternoon, authorities said.
Police entered the home at 6:24 p.m., at which point they encountered Patrick Lin, armed with a weapon, authorities said. Lin was shot by two officers and taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, authorities said.
Officers then made a harrowing discovery: Lin's parents lifeless in two separate bedrooms on the second floor, authorities said. The cause of death for both victims were blunt force injuries to the head, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide, authorities said.
Lin is charged with murder in the first degree, attempted murder and multiple weapons offenses, authorities said. He remains hospitalized in stable condition, authorities said. Upon discharge from the hospital, Lin will be lodged in the Somerset County Jail, authorities said.
