The remains of Thomas Medlin, of Saint James, were found in the water near Red Hook in Brooklyn on Saturday, March 7, the Suffolk County Police Department said. His identity was confirmed Thursday.
Medlin was last seen on Jan. 9. His family said he left school and traveled into the city, potentially to meet someone he met on the online gaming platform Roblox. However, investigators later said the platform was not associated with Medlin’s disappearance.
Instead, cops said Medlin’s last known location was on the Manhattan Bridge at 7:06 p.m. on Jan. 9. His final cell phone activity occurred at 7:09 p.m., and surveillance cameras captured a splash into the water below the bridge at 7:10 p.m., police said.
Medlin was never seen leaving the bridge via pedestrian exits, and authorities said Jan. 28 they did not expect foul play in his disappearance. His official cause and manner of death have not been determined.
Earlier on the day of his disappearance, Medlin was seen departing Stony Brook School around 3:30 p.m., sprinting to Stony Brook Train Station, and then inside Grand Central Terminal around 5:30 p.m., according to police.
New York police announced the discovery of human remains in Red Hook on Saturday but did not provide further details at the time.
