While at the work zone at Evesham Road, Matthew Senkier began shouting profanities at the officer and demanding that he leave the area, Gloucester Township police said.
Soon after, Senkier entered a vehicle, drove onto the closed roadway, and proceeded recklessly through the active construction zone, police said. Senkier accelerated toward construction workers before stopping a short distance into the work zone where the roadway became impassable, police said.
Senkier then reversed the vehicle, nearly striking a police officer, law enforcement said. The officer ran toward the vehicle and ordered Senkier to exit to place him under arrest, police said.. The driver refused to comply, continued yelling at the officer, and again accelerated through the work zone, police said.
As Senkier fled, he again nearly struck multiple individuals before cutting through a nearby business parking lot and continuing onto a residential street, police said.
Construction workers immediately ran toward the officer out of concern he had been struck by the fleeing vehicle, but no injuries were reported police said.
Senkier was located and arrested, police said. He is charged with eluding, obstruction, resisting arrest and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said. He was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings, police said.
