A man affectionately known only as "Mr. Fields" delivered a whole lot more to one Maryland neighborhood.

The longtime US Postal Service letter carrier and Navy vet is heading into retirement after becoming a fixture in the Sligo Park Hills community in Silver Spring, where neighbors are now stepping up to give him a sendoff worthy of his years of service.

A GoFundMe campaign launched by Silver Spring resident Adam Landsman is raising money as a retirement gift for Fields, whom he described as far more than the person who brought letters and packages to their doors.

"For many of us in Sligo Park Hills, Mr. Fields has been much more than our letter carrier," Landsman wrote. "(He became) a familiar and beloved presence in our neighborhood."

Fields served in the US Navy before beginning another career in public service with USPS, according to the fundraiser.

Along the way, he became a popular face in the neighborhood.

Landsman said Fields was known for his integrity, smile, and faith, as well as the simple consistency of being there day after day.

"Neighbors have come to know and appreciate not just his dedication to the job, but the kindness and steady presence he brought to our daily lives," he wrote.

Now, the deliveries are winding down.

And his neighbors want to return the favor.

The campaign was created as Fields prepares to begin retirement, with donations intended as a personal gift from members of the community to help him start his next chapter.

"If Mr. Fields has ever brightened your day, served your family, or simply made this neighborhood feel more connected, please consider giving and sharing this fundraiser," Landsman wrote.

There is one important wrinkle.

To comply with applicable law, organizers said the money will not be given to Fields until after his retirement from the US Postal Service officially takes effect.

Then, after years spent delivering to his neighbors, something will finally be waiting for him.
