Jeffrey Walker, a 30-year-old Troy resident, got 12 years behind bars and five years of probation at his sentencing hearing Friday, April 24, the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s office said.
Walker’s lengthy sentence came in part because he was already on parole for a previous weapons conviction. In October 2018, a Troy man was shot in the back and wounded, later leading to Walker’s conviction on assault and weapons charges.
However, the conviction was tossed in May 2024 by an appeals court, which ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to identify Walker as the shooter.
But when cops searched Walker’s residence on 4th Street in Troy in October 2024, they found a handgun that had been modified with a “switch” to fire like an automatic weapon, according to the district attorney’s office.
Walker’s DNA was found on the pistol, investigators said. He was convicted on second-degree and third-degree weapons possession charges on Feb. 20 following a one-week trial.
