Haverstraw resident Isaac E. Catedral was arraigned on the indictment in Rockland County Court on Friday, Nov. 6, before Judge David M. Ascher, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced.
The indictment follows a violent series of events on Oct. 23 that began with an alleged break-in at a Haverstraw home and left three police officers injured. According to prosecutors, Catedral repeatedly pounded on the front door of a home while screaming at the people inside before entering the residence armed with a knife.
He then fled in a vehicle, authorities said. As police tried to stop him, prosecutors said Catedral struck and ran over a Town of Haverstraw Police officer at the intersection of Sharp Street and Prospect Street.
Rather than stopping, Catedral accelerated away, leaving the injured officer behind, prosecutors said.
What followed was a dangerous chase through Rockland County, during which Catedral allegedly swerved into oncoming traffic several times and reached speeds of more than 80 mph. The pursuit eventually brought him northbound onto Route 9W, where he drove into the opposite lane and crashed head-on into a Haverstraw Police patrol vehicle carrying two officers, according to the DA's Office.
Prosecutors said Catedral also struck vehicles belonging to other drivers during the chase.
When officers reached his vehicle after the crashes, they found Catedral behind the wheel and alone inside, according to the District Attorney's Office.
The officer who was run over suffered significant physical injuries, while the two officers in the patrol car were also injured in the head-on collision. All three were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Catedral was arrested following the chase and initially charged with several offenses, including attempted aggravated murder and assault.
The new indictment charges Catedral with attempted aggravated murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree attempted assault, four counts of second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, and two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Following Friday's arraignment, Catedral was remanded without bail pending his next court appearance on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
The investigation is still ongoing and is being handled by the Town of Haverstraw Police Department. Executive Assistant District Attorney Edward Barrett and Senior Assistant District Attorney Sean Burke are prosecuting the case.
