The fire broke out just before 4:30 p.m. at 1440 Bergen Boulevard, according to Jeff Angermeyer, Deputy Chief of Detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. The building is occupied by Smile Auto Services, a longtime local auto repair shop.
First responders from the Fort Lee Police and Fire Departments arrived quickly and requested mutual aid from surrounding departments. Angermeyer said.
A firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries during fire suppression, Angermeyer said.
As a result, the Bergen County Arson Task Force was activated, and arson investigators responded to the scene to assist local fire officials.
Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area for an investigation.
The investigation is ongoing and is being led by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under Chief Matthew Finck, and the Fort Lee Police Department under Chief Matthew J. Hintze.
