Francis Michael “Frank” Bolger, 71, of Roseland, died Wednesday, March 18, at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston after a brief illness, according to his obituary on the Farmer Funeral Home website.
Bolger lived in South Orange for many years before moving to Roseland in 2000 and worked as a newspaper reporter before managing an electrical and lighting store in Montclair for more than 30 years, according to his obituary.
His most cherished role came later in life, when he became a crossing guard in South Orange and then West Caldwell, where he was known as “Mr. Frank,” the dancing crossing guard: “Known and beloved as ‘Mr. Frank,’ the dancing crossing guard, he drew widespread community and media attention for his dance moves, eye-catching hat collection and friendly waves to all the passersby,” his obituary reads. At Jefferson School, where he served in recent years, Bolger became a daily source of comfort for students and families. In the wake of his death, the Home and School Association has launched a GoFundMe aimed at providing clothing, school supplies, and everyday essentials to children in need. It's called "Mr. Frank's Closet."
“Mr. Frank was more than just a crossing guard at Jefferson School. He was a familiar smile, a steady presence, and someone who truly looked out for every child each and every day,” the campaign reads.
“He made kids feel safe, seen, and cared for—and that kindness left a lasting impact on our entire community. This initiative reflects who Mr. Frank was—quietly helping, always caring, and making sure no child was overlooked.”
