BrightPath Avon Early Learning & Child Care announced this week that it will close on Friday, May 22. The decision comes days after Avon police released new details in their investigation.

Jan Carlos Berrios Otero, 29, was arrested on April 1 and charged with fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor in connection with an incident on March 30, when investigators say he abused the boy during nap time.

The child's parents noticed scratches, swelling, and a scab on his genitals later that day during a bath. When asked what happened, the 4-year-old said, "Mr. John did it," referring to Otero, according to Avon police.

Surveillance footage from the classroom at BrightPath showed Berrios Otero lying next to the boy under a blanket, with his hand moving near the child's genitals, according to an arrest warrant.

The case may not stop there.

Attorneys representing families say they believe more children could be victims. Avon police told WTNH that officers are speaking with parents and reviewing digital evidence after receiving additional allegations.

Police said more charges are likely.

BrightPath management sent a letter to parents on Wednesday, saying they had decided to close because it was in "the best interest of our children and families.”

The center acknowledged the impact on families: “We know this will be a significant disruption, and we do not take this action lightly.”

Officials said staff will help families find new placements.

“We also want you to know that we remain committed to working with law enforcement and other agencies in their search for the facts regarding the situation at BrightPath Avon," the statement said. "We have begun our own externally-led investigation, and we will commission an independent review of these findings when complete."
