Aaron Gookin, of Moreau, was charged with attempted murder and assault for the attack on his mother on Feb. 18 at their home, the Saratoga County District Attorney’s office said.
Gookin strangled his mother and struck her with a piece of wood in the attack, prosecutors said. He was angered after she intervened to protect him from an “internet financial scam,” according to the DA’s office.
A grand jury indicted Gookin on charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, two counts of second-degree assault, and additional misdemeanors, authorities said.
“This was a deeply disturbing and violent attack against a vulnerable member of our community,” District Attorney Brett Eby said.
