Another Potomac Sewage Spill Sends E. Coli Through The Roof, Officials Warn
Just days after a massive sewage overflow sent bacteria levels soaring along the Potomac River, DC Water says another overflow happened — but this one never reached the river. A limited overflow was reported at the collapse site earlier this week, when two bypass pumps clogged with non-disposable wipes were taken out of service for cleaning, according to DC Water. During a period of high flow, wastewater temporarily exceeded pumping capacity, officials said. The overflow was estimated at less than 5,000 gallons. The Frederick County Health Department is cautioning residents to avoid certain waterways after a sewage overflow on Mount St. Mary's University campus on the east side of Route 15. According to health officials, the public should avoid the waters from Saint Mary Run to Toms Creek to Monocacy River, and they've cautioned that swimming or full-body immersion in those areas should be avoided.
