A statewide crackdown on foam takeout containers is about to hit Virginia’s biggest food vendors—and there’s no dodging the deadline. Starting Tuesday, July 1, food vendors with 20 or more locations in Virginia must stop using expanded polystyrene (EPS) containers, the result of legislation passed by the Virginia General Assembly in 2021. Commonly known as Styrofoam, EPS is now being phased out to curb litter, reduce health risks, and push businesses toward more eco-friendly alternatives. Styrofoam packing will soon be a thing of the past for one of Fairfield County’s largest cities. In an effort to aid the environment, the Common Council voted unanimously this week to ban styrofoam in Norwalk, effective as of April 22, 2020. According to studies, styrofoam is responsible for approximately 30 percent of all landfill volume nationwide and 20 percent of the litter in bodies of water. Styrofoam Food Packaging Ban Expected To Move Forward In Nassau County
The end may be near for Styrofoam in Nassau County. Lawmakers in Nassau are expected to vote this week on legislation sponsored by Legislator Denise Ford that would ban the use of Styrofoam containers countywide. The bill would make it illegal to sell or distribute Styrofoam products beginning as soon as January. Fines for violating the policy would lead to fines between $500 and $2,500, which would be enforced by the county’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
