Northern Virginia Schools Hit With ‘High-Risk’ Label In $50M Title IX Funding Fight: Feds
Five of the largest school districts in Northern Virginia have been hit with a major federal penalty after refusing to comply with Title IX, the US Department of Education announced. Alexandria City, Arlington, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and Prince William County Public Schools have all been placed on “high-risk” and “reimbursement-only” status, meaning more than $50 million in federal funds can no longer flow directly to the districts. Instead, the schools must now pay expenses upfront and apply for reimbursement, federal officials said this week. The Department of Education sa…

Oops: Pot Shops Planted Too Close To NY Schools, State Admits
New York’s budding cannabis industry just got smoked by a math mistake. Dozens of cannabis dispensaries across New York are facing the possibility of relocation—or closure—after state officials admitted to miscalculating how close shops were to nearby schools. The New York Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) has acknowledged that its prior guidance for measuring the legal distance between dispensaries and school grounds did not comply with state law. Irvington Teacher's Suit Over Alleged Student Attack Dismissed
A lawsuit filed by an Irvington Middle School teacher who claimed to suffer permanent injuries following an attack from a student has been dismissed by a state Supreme Court judge. Last week, Justice Lewis Lubell ruled that the Irvington School District was not liable to pay for the injuries special education teacher Clarice Martin suffered last year, citing the fact that they were work-related, stating that the court determined she “failed to state a viable claim against the (district).” Martin had alleged that she suffered “grievous and permanent injuries,” following an incident on March…

Poughkeepsie Superintendent Accuses School District Of 'Emotional Distress'
The Poughkeepsie City School District Superintendent is thinking of suing her own school board. Superintendent Nicole Williams has filed a notice of claim against the board for $1 million, citing "emotional distress." In the claim, Williams' attorney, Stanley Silverstone, the board's actions have cost her $13,567 in legal fees and irreparable harm to her reputation. Williams and the school board have been butting heads over teacher transfers. Williams disputed a board vote that placed a moratorium on involuntary teacher and administrator transfers for the 2017-2018 school year. …
