An 80-year-old Virginia woman was conned out of more than $26,000 by crooks posing as US Treasury agents — until detectives set a trap that ended with a Maryland man in cuffs, officials said.
The suspect, James Smith, 30, of Gaithersburg, was arrested after showing up to grab another $10,000 in cash from the victim, the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office said.

A wanted man who ran from deputies was captured in Virginia after an hours-long manhunt — and now he's facing even more charges.
Christopher Stanley, 41, of Bealeton, was spotted by a Fauquier County Sheriff’s deputy on Thursday, July 10 around 10:22 a.m. in the Country Wood Estates Subdivision, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

A routine traffic stop in Culpeper led to the seizure of more than $42,000 worth of cocaine and fentanyl, as authorities arrested a Manassas man following a failed attempt to flee on foot, officials said.
Howard B. Jenkins, 43, was taken into custody after officers with the Blue Ridge Narcotics and Gang Task Force stopped his Chevrolet Tahoe on Wednesday, Jan. 29, along Route 3 near Yellow Bottom Road in Culpeper County for failing to display a license plate.
During the stop, Jenkins attempted to run but was quickly apprehended, police said.

Fewer Lives Lost: Thanksgiving Traffic Deaths Drop Across Virginia For Third Straight Year
Seven people lost their lives in crashes on Virginia roadways over the 2024 Thanksgiving holiday, a significant decrease from previous years, according to Virginia State Police.
The five-day period surveyed by officials, which ran from Wednesday, Nov. 27 through Sunday, Dec. 1, saw seven fatal crashes across the state in Bath, Culpeper, Page, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Warren, and Wythe counties, officials said.
It represents an improvement compared to 11 fatalities in 2023 and a steep drop from 19 in 2022.
