Youngsters Dive Into Whirlwind Invitational

With a first place in one event and seconds in three others, the Whirlwind Diving team got off to a good start on the first day of its Winter Weekend Invitational at the New Canaan YMCA.

Piper Van Wagenen won the girls 9-and-under 3-meter event. Justin Sodokoff, Margaret Rogers and Samuel Scribano all took home seconds. The meet continues through Sunday.

"The kids did great,'' Whirlwind coach Joe Somma said. "We're right in the middle of our training as we get ready for the championship meets. I'm pleased with how we did."

Van Wagenen won the 3-meter with a score of 113.2, nearly 23 points better than her nearest challenger. Sodokoff finished second to Bradley Buchter of the Soaring Eagles Dive Club in the boys 12- and 13-year-olds 1-meter board. Rogers took second in the girls 3-meter for 12- and 13-year-olds. Scribano finished second in the boys 11-and-under 1-meter board.

"It's a good meet to gauge where we are heading into the championship season,'' Somma said. "It's a good weekend. It's a competitive meet — there are some good teams here. I'm pleased with how they are doing so far."

The meet features many area teams, such as the Marlins from Greenwich and Next Generation from Norwalk. Diving continues Saturday with competition in various age groups and a synchronized diving competition as the afternoon's final event. Four events will be held Sunday. Full meet information is available online.
