Young Skaters Cap Perfect Season

The Skyliners Synchronized Skating Preliminary team capped off its perfect season with a win at a competition in Middletown. The Skyliners beat three teams and won all six competitions it entered this season.

The highlight for the preliminary skaters was its first sectional championship at Lake Placid, N.Y., earlier this month. Their polished and fast performance to the music of "Bye Bye Birdie" earned first place in the qualifying and championship rounds. The competition featured 17 teams from the East Coast.

Preliminary team members include Greenwich's Madison deBlasi, Nathalie Felton, Kathryn Goodfriend, Nicole Huber, Margot Sosa and Maggie Toal; Riverside's Michelle Woo; Darien's Maggie Brooks; and Weston's Jillian Belluck. Girls on the 19-member team range in age from 7 to 11.

The preliminary team's victory at Lake Placid capped a banner competition for the Skyliners. Its juvenile and intermediate teams won gold medals, its novice team took silver and the pre-juvenile team won bronze.

The juvenile, intermediate and novice lines will compete in the National Synchronized Skating Championships in Ontario, Calif., in March. The junior team received a bye to the national championships after winning a competition in January. It also won the 2011 Spring Cup in Milan earlier in February.

Sarah LeBlanc Blost and Nina Newby coach the preliminary team. Clinics and tryouts for the 2011-12 season start in mid-March. The Skyliners are affiliated with skating clubs in Stamford, Greenwich and New York. Visit the Skyliners website for more details.
