Yonkers Native Crowned "Miss Black USA"

YONKERS, N.Y. – A Yonkers native has been crowned “Miss Black USA.”

Selena Watkins, a 2005 Gorton High School graduate, earned the title Monday night in Washington D.C. The 24-year-old graduate of Rutgers University and reigning “Miss Black New York,” outlasted 30 contestants from 28 states to take the prize.

On Sunday, the night before the announcement, Watkins announced on Facebook her family had joined her in the nation’s capital for the big event.

“They are so happy and so am I! We are going for it! Everything we've got! Miss Black USA!” she wrote.

Now in its 16th year, the nationwide competition says it focuses on the key attributes for today’s successful African-American woman - mind, body and spirit and “celebrates the scholastic achievement and believes that education is the key to lifelong success and empowerment."

The site says it provides its winners with scholarship opportunities. Watkins, a 24-year-old fitness instructor, said she plans to use her winning platform to focus on health and wellness in the community.

After the announcement, friends and family showed their support on Watkin’s Facebook page.

“She is an unbelievable fitness trainer, a beautiful dancer, ballet and all other dance genres, she is so hard working and motivated, she is bright and articulate with the greatest smile in the world,” Michelle Longo-Bloom, a client of Watkins, wrote on her wall. “She is an all-round beautiful person.”
