October is here and that means residents can dust off their gas-powered leaf blowers, free to use the gardening equipment as they please.
The citys summer ban on leaf blowers, which expired Sunday, is from June 1 to Sept. 30. Enacted in 2007, officials say the restriction was meant to curb unnecessary air and noise pollution during the summer months.
Meanwhile, as the leaves begin to fall, the Green Policy Task Force reminds residents they can take advantage of the Yonkers Organic Waste Disposal Yard.
Residents are encouraged to drop off organic materials at the 610 Nepperhan Ave. yard, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The yard will be open for organic waste through Jan. 7. Last year, the yard collected 42,789 tons of waste, according to Ken Greehan of the Yonkers Department of Public Works.
Residents, however, are asked to follow certain rules of the organic waste yard:
- Only organic materials are allowed to be brought to the yard.
- Do not bag anything in plastic or the load will be refused.
- Only branches up to 10-inches thick will be accepted.
- No grass clippings, tree stumps, dirt or rocks are allowed.
For those looking to dispose of their leaves a little closer to home, the city will begin its pick-up service later this month. From Oct. 17 through Dec. 12, residents may place leaves collected in brown paper compost bags or in open containers at curbside for collection by the city.
Officials remind residents, however, it is a violation of the city code for property owners to place leaves in the street.
