Norwalk's Brandon Riggins finished third while Darien's Lars Remole and Fairfield Warde's Mike Sullivan took fourth Saturday at the State Open wrestling championships at the New Haven Athletic Center. All three qualified to participate in next week's New England Regional, which will also be held at the New Haven Athletic Center.
Riggins took third at 189 with an injury default win over Mark Dilley of Thomaston. Riggins went 5-1 in the tournament, with his only loss a 4-3 setback to eventual champion Aren Norman of Bacon Academy in the semifinals. Riggins won four straight matches in the consolation bracket to take third. Greenwich's Ben Ceci took second in the weight class. Weston's Carmine Magnoli won his first match, but dropped the next two.
Remole lost his first match to Ryan Butler of Xavier, 2-0. The senior rallied with four straight wins before dropping a 4-2 decision to Johnny Bello of Conard in the third place match. Remole had three pins and a decision in his four consolation wins.
Sullivan, the top seed at 160, dropped a 9-6 decision to Alexander Manwaring of Ledyard in the second round. He came back to win three straight matches before falling to Daniel Kuraz of Montville, 6-3, in the third place match. Wilton's Clay Helms also competed at 160 and went 0-2.
New Canaan's Brian Khzouz won his first two matches at 145 before falling to eventual champion Lucas Muntz of Conard in the semifinals. Khzouz lost both matches in the consolation bracket and settled for sixth.
Fairfield Warde's Evan Fraser was fifth at 130, and teammate Pharoah Eaton was sixth at 125. Eaton lost to Stamford's Ben Pierre-Saint in the quarterfinals. Warde's Alex Delaney also took fifth at 171 as the Mustangs finished 11th overall and first among FCIAC schools. James Heinzman also competed at 189 for Warde.
Chris Guinta went 1-2 at 215 pounds for Staples, while Julian Gendels also went 1-2. Complete results are available at casciac.org.
