Four wrestlers from Main Street Connect communities won championships Saturday at the Class L championships at Bristol Central High School. Weston's Carmine Magnoli and also advanced to the finals in Class S and settled for a silver medal.
Fairfield Warde's Mike Sullivan, Norwalk's Brandon Riggins, New Canaan's Brian Khzouz and Darien's Lars Remole won Class L championships.
Sullivan won the 160-pound championship and the meet award for the fastest falls. He pinned all four of his opponents in 5:01. Sullivan, who also won the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship, captured the title with a pin in 1:17 in the final against Ryan Pearson of Avon. The undefeated senior is the top seed for this week's State Open.
Riggins had the most unexpected run of all the wrestlers. The junior, seeded 10th, stormed through the field. He won the final, 16-3, over No. 4 Dave St. Onge of Avon. Riggins had a pin and two technical falls en route to the final.
Remole won the 140-pound final with a 7-6, three-overtime win over Kyle Schillling of RHAM. Remole, also an FCIAC champion, won his first three matches by pin before the close call against Schilling. Remole is seeded third for the State Open.
Khzouz won the 145-pound championship with a thrilling 11-8 win over New Milford's Anthony Terlizzi, the No. 1 seed. Khzouz, who finished second in the FCIAC, became the Rams' first Class L winner since Mike Milano in 2008. Khzouz, the No. 3 seed, had two pins and a decision en route to the final.
Warde's Pharoah Eaton settled for a silver medal at 125 pounds, falling in the final to No. 1 seed Nick Amorando of New Milford. Teammate Evan Fraser took second at 130, falling to Edward Carroll of Hand in the final. James Neomontis fell in the 135 final, dropping a decision to Jake Savoca of Daniel Hand. Also, Alex Delaney took second at 171. He fell to top-seeded Devon Carillo of Middletown in the final.
Warde finished fourth in Class L with 175 points. New Milford won with 216. Darien took sixth with 102. Wilton's Clay Helms also punched his ticket to the State Open with a third-place finish at 160.
Magnoli lost in the final to top-seeded Mark Dilley of Thomaston. Magnoli had a pin and two decisions en route to the final.
