Ever wonder who is responsible for that big holiday wreath at the New Canaan Post Office? It's time to tip your Santa hat to some women with green thumbs.
About 40 members of the Garden Center of New Canaan and the New Canaan Garden Club worked Tuesday in Town Hall to create 40 wreaths for the Christmas season. The Garden Club has worked on the project since 1960, and the two organizations began working together on the wreaths in 1997.
"It's really fun to see people come together to make things that make the town beautiful," said Faith Kerchoff, a Garden Center member for about 22 years. "We take pride in helping the town look nice."
The women used trimmed yard bushes, materials from the Lee Garden, trimmed ilex and fallen evergreen branches from town trees to create the wreaths, Kerchoff said.
The six largest wreaths will hang at Town Hall, the Post Office, the New Canaan Police Department, the New Canaan Library, the New Canaan Metro-North station and the Outback Teen Center. The smaller wreaths will find homes at prominent town locations, including the train station, police headquarters as well as Irwin and Waveny parks. Public works employees put the wreaths up Tuesday afternoon.
The red bows adorning the wreaths were created at a workshop held in October, she said.
May-Lis Gronlund, a resident of New Canaan for 13 years and organizer of the wreath workshop, said she enjoyed assembling decorations that will make the town feel a little more festive as Christmas approaches.
"We want New Canaan to look beautiful," said Gronlund, a member of the Garden Center for two years. "People thank us for giving the town this additional Christmas spirit. It gets us all in the spirit of the holidays and makes us contribute to the community."
