MOUNT KISCO, NY-- Mount Kisco residents come from all over the globe. Some have been here for generations, others have recently moved into the area. The Mount Kisco Public Library wants to hear the stories of people from all different nationalities.
If you're new to this country and would like an outlet to share your experiences as an immigrant coming to the United States for the first time, the Mount Kisco Public Library, in conjunction with Poets & Writers, Inc., The New York State Council on the Arts, and Friends of the Mount Kisco Public Library, and the Foundation for the Mount Kisco Public Library present a new workshop, Immigrant Writings.
The Immigrant Writings Workshop will be a 10-week long workshop that will be held on Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. starting October 15.
This workshop is for people who have some fluency in English and are looking to translate their story into written word, said Susan Riley, Library Director. We want to help people tell their stories about the difficulties faced when coming into our country, what they like or dislike about their new environment. There are so many different stories that need to be told.
Depending on the author, the library will feature some of the work done throughout the workshop. We've discussed compiling the works and having a reading, or making a copy available to members of the library, but it's up to the individual writer. Some want to share their story with others and some do not, said Riley.
In the past, we have held a memoir senior writing workshop, it was so popular, we had a waiting list. That workshop has transitioned us into this event. We thought with the demographics of our area it would be unique and popular, said Riley.
Riley recounts a story she's was told as a young girl, My grandmother was from the Austria/Hungary area, she voyaged to France and eventually made her way onto a boat that was supposed to come to America by way of the British Channel, but the boat sank. She was rescued and later boarded another boat in England and finally made her way to America.
Stories like that need to be told and the Mount Kisco Public Library is offering residents just the outlet to do so.
