Can you hear me now? It's a common phrase many of us hear ourselves saying. Wireless providers in Fairfield County say that because of increasing demands, they are expanding their networks as quickly as possible.
"Verizon Wireless introduced 3G to Fairfield County back in 2007, and today broadcasts a 3G signal from every site throughout the state," said Michael Murphy, New England Region spokesman for Verizon Wireless. "In the past 18 months, we've expanded network coverage and capacity throughout Fairfield County, and increased coverage by adding new sites in Greenwich, Bridgeport and Darien."
Susan Baranyi, a spokeswoman for AT&T, said the company added three new mobile broadband cell sites in Fairfield County last year. AT&T's 3G network has also expanded to more than 50 sites throughout the county to enhance coverage.
The debate over cell tower sites has been an ongoing fight. Connecticut is one of two states that allow state agencies to decide where cell towers are built. T-Mobile recently held public hearings in New Canaan for a proposed cell tower at 208 Valley Road. Easton currently has two cell towers and a third on the way. But town residents are concerned because the barn close to the proposed location on Snow's Farm was recently citied for historic preservation.
The increased use of text messaging and high-speed web access is also adding demand and stress on the network. "People across Connecticut are increasingly relying on smartphones and 3G apps to manage their busy lives and stay connected at home or on-the-go," said Richard Enright, director for Network Systems Performance for Verizon Wireless.
