Our Lady of Fatima students filled the pews of the church Wednesday morning as they prepared to receive their ashes for Ash Wednesday, the start of the season of Lent.
Lent is the season of penance, reflection and fasting for Roman Catholics and Christians as they prepare for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus on Easter, Catholic.org says. On this day, ashes are placed on their foreheads in the sign of the cross to remind people that their life will pass away on Earth, the website says.
Ashes are used as a symbol of penance and made sacramental by the receiving the Churchs blessing. They help remind Catholics to develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice, Catholic.org says.
Our Lady of Fatima will also be giving ashes out at an 8 p.m. Mass Wednesday.
