Charlee Allyn and Isabelle Cammarate, both 4, couldn't work fast enough Wednesday afternoon to peel the sand off their plastic dinosaur skeletons.
With Mozart playing softly in the background, the girls got some help from art teacher Katja Evans at Wilton's Bright Horizons preschool and after-school center. Evans leaned over their tiny desk in the center's brand new Art Studio to help the girls scrape off the sand.
"It's fun. I want to get as much off as I can," said Isabelle, of Wilton, with her mother Kristin looking on. "I want to see the dinosaur better."
The project is among many the children have done since the Art Studio opened a few weeks ago, and there's more to come, said Center Director Kelly Esposito. "We can do so much more with imaginative and creative art now that we have this art space," Esposito said.
The center has scheduled an official celebration of the Art Studio's opening, "Celebrate the Arts," from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The event is open to the public and its 100 children and their parents.
It will include face-painting, fun Father's Day gifts and other art projects to make, pottery demonstrations, live music and a tour for parents considering sending their children from 6 months to 12 years to the center.
"The new room is giving us the opportunity to work on more expansive art projects such as using colorful recyclables to create works of art," said Evans.
The room, filled with crayons, paints and brushes, as well as colorful recyclable sculptures made by the children, wasn't used for anything special before its transformation into an art room, said Esposito.
"Like all classroom spaces at Bright Horizons, the new Art Studio was designed specifically to support the intellectual growth of the children in our center," she said.
