With the conference titles settled, spring sports teams from Wilton High School have their eyes on bigger prizes now. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference released the state tournament brackets for the nine spring sports, and Wilton is well represented.
The girls lacrosse team defended its FCIAC title Friday, defeating Darien, 15-12. The Warriors will be the top-ranked team in the new Class M tournament. The state tournament expanded from two to three divisions this year in girls lacrosse. Wilton (14-1) will host 16-seed Bethel (8-8) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The boys lacrosse team fell to the Darien juggernaut again, this time in the semifinals of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament. Wilton (11-5) enters the Class M tournament as the fifth-seed and will host 12th-ranked Windsor (9-7) at 5 p.m. Wednesday. A showdown with Darien looms, with a possible meeting in the state semifinals, should the two teams make it that far.
The Wilton varsity baseball team fell just short of qualifying for the FCIAC tournament and will have a difficult road ahead if it hopes to bring home a Class L championship. Ranked 18th, the Warriors will travel to No. 15 Notre Dame-West Haven on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. game. If they can beat the Green Knights, second-seeded Avon looms in the second round.
The softball team also had a heartbreaking finish to its regular season, falling a game shy of qualifying for its first-ever FCIAC tournament. Wilton will try to pull off a Cinderella run in the tournament as the 27th-seed. It travels to sixth-ranked Brookfield on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game.
The girls tennis team was swept by Greenwich in the FCIAC quarterfinals. It enters the Class M state tournament as the 15th-seed and will take on Platt in a qualifier round. That game will be held at Daniel Hand High School at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will then face second-seeded Hand after the qualifier match.
The girls and boys track teams will be well represented at the Class L championships to be held at Middletown High School on Thursday. The boys tennis and the boys and girls golf tournament seedings will be announced later this week.
