Wilton Swimmers Help Wahoos Win State Title

The Wilton Y Wahoos won its 25th straight Connecticut YMCA championship, amassing 4,837 points overall. The Greenwich YWCA was second with 2,643 overall team points.

The win was true team effort, with many Wahoos putting in their fastest swims ever in the championship earlier this month. Stephen Holmquist finished first in every event he swam for the 13-14 boys, including the 200 fly, 200 individual, 500 free, 200 free, 100 fly and 400 IM. Eight-year-old Emma Babashak took first place in all three of her individual events, including the100 IM, 25 butterfly and 50 free.

Many other Wilton swimmers scored points in the title-winning effort. In the 8-and-under category, Caroline Hess was second in the 25 free, third in the 50 free and fifth in the 25 fly. Ellen Holmquist was second in the 25 breast, fourth in the 50 free and ninth in the 100 IM. Caroline Crampton finished 10th in the 25 free, 12th in the 25 fly and ninth in the 50 free. Her sister Catherine Crampton finished seventh in the 100 IM, slashing more than six seconds off her time. Anna Imrie was fifth in the 25 breaststroke, and Rita Roberts took eighth in the 25 back.

Thomas McHugh touched first in the 8-and-under boys 25 breast, second in the 50 free and sixth in the 25 fly. Teammate Nathaniel Snyder took second in the 25 back, eighth in the 50 free and 11th in the 25 free. In the 9-10 boys category, Ryan Looney, Jack Lewis, Jake Florio, Matthew Martin and Richard Nolan scored points in each of their individual events. Ryan was fourth in the 50 fly, fifth in the 50 back and eighth in the 50 breast. Jack was second in the 100 breast, third in the 100 fly and ninth in the 50 free. Jake was eighth in the 50 free as well as the 50 back and 11th in the 100 back. Matthew was third in the 100 free, fifth in the 50 fly and eighth in the 100 back. In the 9-10 category, Richard was third in the 100 breast, fourth in the 50 back and 11th in the 100 free. William Holmquist finished 11th in the 50 breast, chalking up a personal best. Jason Xie was fifth in the 50 breast and ninth in the 100 IM.

For the 11-12 girls, Emma Holmquist captured third in the 50 breast, ninth in the100 fly and 12th in the 200 free. Katrina Trentos was third in the 100 free, fourth in the 200 free and seventh in the 200 IM. Samantha Florio was 11th in the 50 free and seventh in the 50 breast. Lillian Chang took sixth in the 50 back, and Stephanie Xie was 11th in the 50 fly.

The 11-12 boys division saw outstanding swims by Will Suchy, who finished seventh in the 200 IM and 12th in the 100 backstroke. Derek Benison was 11th in the 50 free and eighth in the 50 breast. In the 13-14, Chance Ricci was 10th in the 100 breaststroke and 12th in the 200 breaststroke. Jake Kealy was eighth in the 100 back.

For the 13-14 girls, Wilton's Kristen Moss gold-medaled in three events, taking first in the 100 back, 200 back and 100 free. She was second in the 100 fly and the 400 IM, and ninth in the 100 breaststroke. Stephanie Moriarity was first in the 50 free, second in the 200 back and 100 back, third in the 100 fly and 11th in the 100 free. Courtney Gilroy was fourth in the 500 free, ninth in the 200 breast, and 12th in the 100 breast and 100 free. Brooke Hendee was seventh in the 500 free, eighth in the 100 breast, sixth in the 200 breast, 11th in the 200 IM and 12th in the 400 IM. Hannah Armstrong was 10th in the 200 backstroke, and Madeline Srivastava was 11th in the 100 backstroke

For the 15-18 year old girls, KC Moss touched first in the 100 back, 200 IM and 400 IM, second in the 200 back, third in the 500 free and eighth in the 50 free. Sophie Hornby placed fourth in the 400 IM, fifth in the 200 breast and ninth in the 200 IM. Caroline O'Brien was second in the 200 IM, third in the 200 fly, fourth in the 100 fly and fifth in the 50 free. Megan Lattimer was ninth in the 500 free.

Along with top place finishes, the Wahoos saw many swimmers rise to the championship occasion with personal bests, often in multiple events. Ellie Cramer set a new personal mark by eight seconds in the 100 free and took time off in the 50 free and 50 back. Kathy Cunningham posted best times in all six events she swam, including 13.12 seconds off on her 200 backstroke. Jackson Dill took more than five seconds off in the 100 free.

Mia Fung was strong in the 50 free, back and breast — best times in all. Julianna Hume posted her best-evers in the 9-10 girls 50 back, 100 free and 50 breast. George Mgaloblishvili took time off in the 100 breast, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, and 200 breast — where he bested his time by more than 11 seconds. Daniel Xie beat his best in the 100 breast, 200 free, 100 fly and 50 free; Rory Hess in the 25 free and fly; Albert Cai in the 200 free and 100 breast; Grace Ziskind in the 50 free, 50 fly and 50 back; Jason Cai in the 50 free and 50 breast; Arisa Cowe in the 50 free and 50 back; Hailey Looney in the 25 back and 25 breast; Evaline Xie in the 100 breast and the 200 free; Julia Lewis in the 500 free and 200 back; and Annika Srivastava in the 500 free, 50 back and 50 breast.

Also swimming fast, scoring personal best in individual events were Melanie Gedney (100 breast and 200 free), Shannon Golden (50 fly, 100 free and 50 breast), Kimberly Green (100 back, 200 back and 400 IM), Grace Hendee (200 IM), Sinclaire Higgins (100 IM), Jonah Hirsch (50 back and 50 breast), Chloe Hornby (50 free), Eleanor Imrie (100 breast), Lily Kealy (100 fly), Brooke Kelly (50 fly) Walter Kress (100 free), Simon Lindberg (50 back and 50 breast), Livingston Loud (100 IM and 50 back), Haley McHugh (50 free and 50 breast), Julia Morneau (50 back), Nora Noel Nolan (50 free), Bayley Storrier (50 free and 50 breast), Sophia Sudano (500 free and 50 fly), Alexandra Troy (50 fly), and Albert Wei (50 breast).

Wilton also saw strong championship-caliber performances from Morgan Dill, Devin Benison, Max Bloom, Devon Borchetta, Jack Caldwell, Reilly Caldwell, Margaret Collias, Lindsay Cooney, Jack Cramer, Sarah Hynes, Megan Lafond, Andrea Prospect, Paula Tabaschek, Lauren Vogric and Kyle Wilson.
