Wilton Sparkles Again

Wilton's Annual Townwide Community Clean Up Day was a big success Saturday. Thanks to more than 180 citizen volunteers who turned out to help collect litter, the town removed tons of roadside debris from many streets, school areas and recreational fields.

Volunteers were assigned target cleanup areas and then descended upon Routes 7 and 33, Belden Hill Road, Drum Hill Road, Mather Street, River Road, Olmstead Hill Road, School Road and DeForest Road. Sections of the Norwalk River were cleaned up, as well as Merwin Meadows, school areas and Allen's Meadow.

The Conservation Commission and Mike Conklin from the town's Department of Environmental Affairs, who organized the Clean Up Day, contacted many community organizations in advance. This made a big difference with a record turnout of volunteers on a brilliant sunny spring day.

A big round of applause goes to members of Wilton's Kiwanis Club, Republican Town Committee, Trout Unlimited and Wilton Land Trust as well as Wilton High School students, Middlebrook School Recycling Club members, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Coldwell Banker and town officials.

Though many citizens have Saturday morning conflicts with children's game schedules, we urge all residents to take a few moments to clean up litter in your respective neighborhoods. It just takes a few minutes to pick up discarded cans, bottles, plastic bags and other unsightly litter. It will make you feel better and your neighborhood will look better, too.

Thanks again to all the citizen volunteers who helped make our community sparkle again.
