The school year in Wilton may grow longer at the same time it gets shorter. This would be achieved by cutting the length of the school year, cutting into spring break and possibly pushing back the last day of school under a plan by Superintendent Dr. Gary Richards. This has been an unbelievably challenging winter for all of us, Richards said.
Richards proposal would 1) move the March 21 professional development day to late June, 2) use June 23 and 24 as the final days of school, 3) get permission to reduce the school year from 181 to 180 days, (4) eliminate up to four days of the April Break and 5) use June 27-30 if needed. Richards will present his plan to the Board of Education on Feb. 17.
The school calendar can still accommodate two more snow days, Richards said in an open letter to parents. If they are used before the Board of Education can make a decision on changing the schedule, the last day of school would be June 23 or 24. The letter did not say what would happen if there are three or more snow days before the Feb. 17 meeting.
Richards has canceled six days of school because of the weather this winter, making June 22 the last day of school. The school calendar originally set June 14 as the last day.
