WILTON, Conn. Dozens of Wilton's young residents turned out for a theatrical production of "Jack and the Beanstalk" performed by a tiny troupe of actors at the Wilton Library on Thursday.
Michael Graham brought his handmade puppets from Spring Valley Puppet Theater and presented his unique twist on the classic fairy tale.
"The way I tell it is a little bit different than you remember," Graham told the audience. His version starts as Jack is told to sell the family's cow, Violet, for the best price. And he still opts to trade it for a handful of magic beans. New additions include a wisecracking chicken in place of the goose that lays the golden egg. And, of course, there's a happy ending as Jack outsmarts the giant and is reunited with his entire family, including Violet.
After the one-man performance, Graham popped out from behind the stage to give the crowd a close-up look at his creations. He creates his "actors" with cloth bodies topped with heads made from a type of paper mache or wood.
He also showed how audience members could go home and design their own puppets with little more than a cloth, rubber band and Styrofoam ball.
Thursday's show was part of the library's Plant the Seed and Read program.
