Wilton Library Crowd Checks Out Tunes

WILTON, Conn. – For more than a decade, Thursdays in July mean music at the Wilton Library.

Chance Browne and the Twinkies opened the 11th annual Summer Music & More Concert Series on Thursday night and filled the library with their brand of blues.

"In my view, it really starts the weekend," said Janet Crystal, library publicist. Although the library concerts have taken place for more than 11 years, music performances used to occur at lunchtime. But Crystal said these shows never caught on with the noontime crowd. So the library opted to start the music after work.

What hasn't changed, said Crystal, is the Village Market's role as sponsor and provider of the free munchies. Crystal's husband, Michael, also donates all the wine served at the four-concert series.

Another constant is the diverse members of the crowd who show up faithfully, said Crystal.

"It's like from 2 to 102," she said. "You get the babies in the strollers and the little kids dancing."

Concerts continue next week with the return of Wilton native Jeff Harding, who'll perform an acoustic rock set. July 21's show features the return of oldies vocal group In Harmony. The series concludes July 28 with R&B band The Bernadettes.

Each show runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Brubeck Room and Courtyard.
